Read moreOn Saturday, the Elgin Parks & Recreation Department hosted a cardboard boat race, where competing teams built their own boats made of cardboard to be driven in Morris Memorial Pool. The Titanic, helmed by William Meuth and built by Braden Meuth, defied the history of its namesake and stayed afloat long enough to win the race at 34 seconds. However, Bob, a boat piloted by Teddy, was right behind, coming in second place by only one second.

Participants are encouraged to build a “parade float” or 4th of July parade in their front yard through July 10, and decorate their driveway or sidewalks with their best chalk art through July 15, then send photographs to parks@ci.elgin.tx.us.
