On March 25 at approximately 1:58 p.m., City of Bastrop police officers were dispatched to the area of State Highway 71 and Paul C Bell Street in response to a vehicle fire. Several Bastrop police officers arrived on scene with mutual aid received from Bastrop Fire Department, ESD 2, PHI Air Medical and Acadian EMS. A preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a 2000 Suzuki Forenza was westbound on Highway 71 when he crossed the median and drove into oncoming traffic, hitting a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck.
