Cold, controlled and collective. As the cold front pushed through Central Texas on Tuesday night, February 4, the battle of Highway 290 was just beginning. Elgin and Manor squared off on a windy, cold evening, but the play on the field was plenty hot.
Elgin struck first with a goal in the third minute of the game by team captain Richie Aguirre, #8. The Mustangs struggled to get past midfield as the Wildcats controlled the possession of the ball and maintained the game on their half of the field for most of the first half.
As a collective team effort, Elgin continued to pressure the Manor defense, getting two more shots on a goal after a penalty kick. The first came off the crossbar after a 25-yard kick. The follow-up shot was well defended by the Manor goalie to deny the 'Cats another score.
However, just before halftime, Aguirre struck again with his second goal of the night. Elgin took a 2-0 lead into halftime and would not relinquish the lead. The Mustangs (3-7-2) did manage to score one goal in the second half as it got windier and colder throughout the night, possibly affecting the play of members of both teams. The contest ended with a 2-1 victory by the Wildcats.
The junior varsity team lost to Manor in the opening match 5-0.
On Friday evening, Elgin travelled to Cedar Creek to take on the Eagles soccer team in another district match up. Cedar Creek (8-3-2) scored two goals in the first half and one more in the second, while holding Elgin (1-5) scoreless to take a 3-0 win.
The Wildcats are 1-2 in district play. They played at home on Tuesday, February 11, taking on Hutto, then will travel to Georgetown East View on Friday evening to play the Patriots.
