Shirley Virginia Hammond, 75, of Elgin, passed away early Friday morning surrounded by her family, June 9, 2023. She was born Sept. 4, 1947, in Houston to Wilbur and Willie Maude Cottle.

Shirley met her husband, Mabin Wendell Hammond in October of 1976 and they married Jan. 7, 1977. Shirley and Wendell both worked to build what they aspired to have. After Wendell’s retirement, they moved to Elgin, so Shirley could care for her terminally ill father. Once in Elgin, they purchased and operated Powermaster Hobby Products. Wendell’s knowledge partnered with Shirley’s accounting and planning and with both of their work ethic, Powermaster thrived. They traveled across the country for many events and conventions for the R/C industry.

She was a member of and contributed a lot to Elgin Church of Christ. Shirley was many things, but her greatest accomplishment was her roles as a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was the kindest of souls and helped so many people.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Willie Maude Cottle; husband, Wendell Hammond; and daughter, Laura Hammond.

Shirley is survived by her son, John Hammond; brother, Wilbur Cottle, Jr.; grandchildren, Jacob Robinson and wife Rachel, Amanda Wolfe and husband JayJay, Katherine Hammond and Lauren Ryman; nephews, Stephen Boyd, Weldon Boyd, Gregg Boyd and William Cottle; nieces, Stephanie Boyd, April Heffley and Raina Stanley; nine great grandchildren and numerous other family and friends.

Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Elgin Funeral Home. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held Saturday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at Elgin Funeral Home with Brother Jason Wilder presiding. Interment will follow at Mc-Dade Cemetery.
