    Katherine (Katie) Louisa Wolf Mogonye

Katherine (Katie) Louisa Wolf Mogonye of Elgin, left this world to meet her Lord Wednesday, April 4, 2024, at the age of 97 years, two months shy of 98 years old. She is leaving behind a life full of cherished memories and a legacy of kindness and generosity.

Katie was born June 12, 1926, in McDade, to Martin and Martha Wolf. In 1946, she married Jim V. Mogonye. They were married for 65 years and resided in Elgin until his passing in 2014.

Katie’s loving spirit led to her helping others, which led in turn to a nursing career. Immediately after her high school graduation in 1943, Katie began her life by joining the Nurse Cadet Corp training program at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. After graduating, WWII had ended, and her first job was as a Red Cross Nurse in Kansas City, Missouri, during the polio epidemic.

After leaving Missouri, she worked at a hospital in Harlingen, and in 1947 she returned home as a nurse at Elgin Fleming Hospital, and then a nurse at Elgin Nursing Home.

Katie would also say she loved every minute of nursing, and she was always glad to help others. Nursing was a way of life for Katie, which is evident having been a nurse for 55 years.

During her 50 plus years of living in Elgin, she self lessly volunteered and belonged to a multitude of organizations. She received many awards for her community service such as Homemaker of the Year in 1980 and again in 1984, Outstanding and Significant Personal Service Certificate by the HR Department of Texas, and she was named the Most Worthy Citizen of the Year by the Elgin Chamber of Commerce. But perhaps her most passionate volunteer work was for the American Cancer Society, where she was instrumental in implementing the Reach for Recovery program in Elgin. This was due to her breast cancer diagnoses, which she was in remission of for five years, only to learn the cancer had returned. Through her enduring faith, steadfast family and friends, amazing doctors at MD Anderson and her endless determination, she overcame cancer a second time and was cancer free for the remainder of her life.

Katie has touched so many lives over the years, and she cherished each person she encountered. Her kind touch, thoughtful words, sincerity and dedication to others was the essence of Katie’s character.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jim V. Mogonye; her brother, Martin (Katherine) Wolf; her sister, Adeline (Alvin) Wolf Eschberger; and her brother, Dan Wolf.

Katie is survived by her loving children, Mike Mogonye of Elgin, Paul (Sandra) Mogonye of Elgin and Amy (Rob) Mogonye Darsey of Fredericksburg. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Rebecca (Matthew) Mogonye Tabor, Stephen (Sally) Mogonye, Darren Mogonye, Clee Mogonye, Randall Mogonye, Kyle (Adriana) Mogonye, Matt Darsey and Kate Darsey. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dan Wolf’s wife, Evelyn Wolf.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home.

The memorial service to honor and celebrate Katie’s life will be held Friday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elgin. A private graveside ceremony will be held beforehand. Immediately following the Memorial Service, the family will gather to reminisce and visit in the fellowship hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elgin, Shiloh Cemetery Organization in McDade, Cattlemen For Cancer Research in Bastrop County and Elgin S.P.J.S.T. in Elgin.

Arrangements entrusted to Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home.
