James Norman Smith, of Elgin, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2024, at Seton Medical Center in Austin.

Jim was born Oct. 20, 1952, in Austin, to Zilmon Smith and Mary Ellen Whelchel. He attended public schools in Austin, graduating from (the “Old”) Austin High School in 1971.

He had a varied professional career. In his younger years he worked for Texas Parks & Wildlife in the licensing department. He then had a cotton harvesting business before moving to Port Aransas and operating both a beach permit and rentals business and a self-service carwash.

He then moved to the family property outside Elgin and operated a dirt-work business installing roads and driveways and helped some neighbors operate a small local convenience store. Later, he worked for the Texas Department of Agriculture inspecting cotton fields for boll weevils.

Hunting season would find Jim on his deer lease with his pals from north Texas. He also liked to fish and garden. He kept the family supplied with venison and fresh vegetables.

Jim is survived by his brother, Z. Smith and his wife Lisa; and nephew. Tyler Smith.

Graveside services Wednesday, July 3, 10 a.m., at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Dr., in Austin, Section 2. Casual dress – no coats or ties.
