Gwendolyn Gay Goble Rivers

It is with great sadness the family of Gwendolyn Gay Goble Rivers announce she peacefully passed away in her sleep at 97 on December 3, 2021.  She was born in Strawn, Texas on May 31, 1924, to Day and Lena Martin Goble.  She grew up with two loving sisters, Gisele Goble Holland and Betty Goble McKinney, who shared a lifetime of devoted friendship together.  

She graduated from Reagan High School in Big Lake, Texas and then attended The University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.  Following college, in 1947 she married Royal Dale Rivers, Jr. and resided in Elgin, where she was a loving and devoted wife and mother to their three children, Steve D. Rivers of Lubbock, Carol Day Rivers Rhode of Victoria and Tres Rivers of Elgin.  Gwen was dearly loved by family as well as numerous lifelong friends.  She was a gracious host and frequently entertained family and friends at property in Menard County as well as in Elgin.  In addition, she and Roy enjoyed traveling the western states to see the beautiful scenery.   She was also an active member of the First Methodist Church Elgin and enjoyed fellowship with many of its members.  

She was preceded in death by both her parents; her husband Roy; and her sister, Gisele Goble Holland.  She is survived by her two sons, Steve D. Rivers and wife Becky of Lubbock and Tres Rivers and wife Sherri of Elgin; her only daughter, Carol Rivers Rhode and husband Dr. David Rhode of Victoria; six wonderful grandchildren, Courtney Rhode Landers and husband Benton of Austin, Robert B. Rivers and wife Rebecca of Guthrie, Allison Rhode of Denver, CO, Molly Rivers Solich and husband Nik of Houston, Grace Rivers of Austin and Shannon Rivers of Austin; four great-grandchildren, Gwen Savannah Christy and Cora Evelyn Christy of Denver, and Benton Goodloe Landers III and Emma Grace Landers of Austin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews,  extended family, and dear friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date, following the holidays.  Arrangements and care are entrusted to Elgin Funeral Home.
