ELGIN — A roadside dispute has left one man dead and another behind bars, police said.

Officers responded to calls for a disturbance and shots fired about 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, on U.S. 290 near County Line Road, according to the Elgin Police Department.

When officers arrived, they discovered the body of Joseph Stanczyk, who suffered a gunshot wound, according to investigators.

Fabian Salas, 34, has been charged with first-degree murder and remained in the Travis County Jail with bond pending.

According to reports, two men pulled over, began to fight and one pulled a gun. The participants did not appear to know each other, investigators said.

Responding to questions about whether this was a road-rage incident, Elgin Public Information Officer Amy Miller said no more information would be released at this time.

Highway lanes blocked off during the probe reopened about 11:30 p.m.
