Elgin has ‘Hatitude’

It’s time for Elgin’s annual Hatitude check. On Saturday, Feb. 4, Hatitude 2023 will be held at FireWild, 201 N. Main St. in Elgin. This year’s honoree is Sister Gwendolyn Johnson, Mount Moriah Baptist Church’s first lady. Honoring African American traditions, Hatitude refers to the tradition of African American women wearing hats to church. The phrase was created by author Deidre Guion in her book, “Grandma’s Hands.” The event will start with a meet-and-greet at 9:30 a.m. featuring “Danish delights and hats galore,” according to a press release.
