The City of Elgin is applying for a grant to improve sidewalks and is seeking to share the Safe Routes to School grant application on Thursday night.

The application is seeking a Transportation Alternatives/Safe Routes to School (TA/SRTS) grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for this year. The project funded by the grant would include parts of Alamo Street, Martin Luther King Boulevard and Nina Street to serve Booker T. Washington Elementary School, and North Main Street from Lexington Street to 11th Street to complete connections of existing sidewalk serving Elgin Elementary School.

A meeting on Thursday evening will explain the project. The meeting will take place during this month’s Sip, Shop & Stroll at the Clever Tiger Art Gallery, 32 North Main Street, starting at 6:30 p.m.

To learn more about the project and the TA/SRTS grant program, please attend, call 512-229-3213 or email amiller@ci.elgin.tx.us. The meeting location is accessible; if language interpretation services are needed, please call 48 hours in advance.

On Tuesday night, the Elgin City Council unanimously passed a resolution in support of applying for this grant to complete the sidewalk project. See next week’s Elgin Courier for more details.
