Elgin community members honored with memorial benches

Three local figures have been immortalized in downtown Elgin with new memorial benches bearing their names and accomplishments.On Thursday evening during Sip, Shop & Stroll, the NAACP Elgin Branch 6174 and the City of Elgin Main Street Program dedicated three memorial benches in honor of local figures Harvey Westbrook, Annie Lee Haywood and Monty Joe Thomas. The dedication ceremony on the front lawn of Elgin City Hall opened with remarks from Elgin Mayor Ron Ramirez, a song performed by Byron Mitchell, and prayers from Reverend D.W.
