Daniel was the seventh of ten children born to Otto Kleidon and Martha Baker Kleidon, on August 20, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. He attend school in Chicago and joined the United Army at the age of 17. After honorably serving his second enlistment, he worked odd jobs for a few years, until taking a job for the City of Chicago with the streets and sanitation division. He worked for over 20 years with the City of Chicago until his retirement in 1995.
