On Friday evening, dozens of Republicans from across Bastrop County got together at the parking lot of Southside Market & BBQ to show support for President Donald Trump. The rally lasted about an hour and a half, and a total of 72 participants attended and lined the side of U.S. Highway 290 while waving flags and holding signs. Due to COVID-19, Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a proclamation in March allowing local May elections to be postponed; as a result, elections for city councils, school boards and other local entities in Bastrop County will take place on November 3 alongside county, state and federal elections. These local elections include the cities of Elgin and Smithville, the school boards of Bastrop, Smithville and McDade ISDs, the Bastrop/Travis Counties Emergency Services District No. 1 and a number of municipal utility districts and water control and improvement districts throughout the county.
